Switching Hosts: What Happens to my DNS Records?

Emily Willis -

How does nameserver integration work?

When a site integrates via nameservers, they are actually switching out their nameserver addresses with Ezoic's. This sits the Ezoic system between the user and the site's content like a proxy. How to update DNS Records when switching hosts (nameserver integration)

When you switch hosts and are integrated via nameservers you have to manually update your DNS records in your Ezoic dashboard to match those at your new host.

It’s important to update the FULL list of records; there are often records in addition to the root domain and www record, such as ftp, webmail, or localhost, which will need updating. You may, depending upon your host, have to add new records to the list. You can do this in Ezoic by going to Settings > Advanced > DNS.

Where do I find a list of my DNS records at my host?

You can get in contact with your host to request these or, often they are found in what is commonly referred to as “zone editor” or “zone files”.

Can Ezoic help?

If you are unsure, you can send the list of records at your new host to a member of our Support team at support@ezoic.com who can update your DNS records for you on the back end of your Ezoic account. It is helpful to send these in a TEXT file so that we can make sure they are pasted across correctly.

How to integrate via Cloudflare

When integrating by Cloudflare, if you have a pre-existing Cloudflare account, all you have to do is add the Cloudflare App to your Ezoic dashboard and enter your Cloudflare account details. Ezoic will then automatically pull your records from Cloudflare and become the primary processor of requests. There is more info on how to do this here:

What changes do I make to my DNS when switching hosts with Cloudflare integration

When integrated via Cloudflare and changing hosts, you have to update DNS records in Ezoic to match those at your new host, since Ezoic holds the master record. These will automatically propagate into Cloudflare. (Note, it doesn't work the other way round; since Ezoic is the primary controller, if you make DNS changes in CF when integrated with Ezoic, Ezoic overwrites these to ensure records match across both).
