Types of Ads: Ezoic's Ad Tester

Modified on: Wed, 21 Feb, 2024

This guide introduces the different ad types that you may come across whilst using the Ezoic system.

Display ads

The most common ad type, display ads is essentially a blanket term for image / video ads of all shapes and sizes. Unlike search advertising that uses a pull approach where users are actively looking for a product/service similar to yours, display advertising uses a push approach where users who see your display ads are targeted purposefully for those ads, either because of remarketing campaigns or maybe they’re browsing a website that’s relevant to your offer.

Native ads

Native ads, sometimes referred to as ‘recommended content’ or ‘promoted stories’ are a way of advertising content in a way that is ‘native’ to its environment, i.e. the native ads related, in one way or another, to the content on the page. When used properly, they can be great for income, however it’s important to strike a balance between your native ads vs display ads. In short, it's a good idea to remember that whilst display ads are designed to stand out, native ads are designed to blend in.

Anchor ads

Anchor ads are site-wide ads offered for Ezoic’s Ad Tester App. Anchor ads are ads which stick to the bottom of the screen regardless of scrolling. They are mostly used on mobile. They are a great addition to any site and have been known to increase income substantially. More info here.

Sticky Sidebar Ads

Sticky sidebar ads will float with the user as they scroll down the page to stay in view. This helps generate a higher CPM as the user is viewing the ad for longer and more likely to click. Be sure to only add the 'Sidebar Floating' unit to the bottom of the sidebar with no content beneath it.

Vignette Ads

This setting allows us to test full-screen ads that appear between page loads. They can be skipped by users at any time. Vignettes are displayed when the user leaves a page, rather than when they arrive on one, so the user doesn’t have to wait for them to load. Only one vignette ad will be shown per user.

Side Rails

Side rails are ads that appear on the left and right sides of a desktop
screen and move as the user scrolls. They are displayed when the screen
is wide enough and are suitable for websites that have a center column
with ample space on both sides.
