Understanding Core Web Vitals using Leap and Big Data analytics

Modified on: Thu, 16 Nov, 2023

You can measure Core Web Vitals within the Ezoic dashboard and Big Data Analytics.

The reports you will find in different areas of the dashboard will give you lots of different insights into how your site is performing.

  • The first place to go for a quick overview of your Core vitals is Ezoic Dashboard > Leap > Measure
  • You can then look a little deeper in the Core Vitals Reports
  • From there you can also see the Worst Pages reports
  • For additional measurements try Big data Analytics

All these sections give a variety of different insights and have their advantages depending on what you are trying to understand.

Leap Measure

For many publishers, the first bit of information you will see regarding Core Web Vitals is the Leap Measure tab that is displayed on the home tab as well as in the Leap section:

Home page

This gives you a very quick look at your Core vitals score for LCP, FID, and CLS out of 100 and you can also see how the rolling 30-day average is trending with a simple line graph.

The 30 days rolling average is calculated from Google's CRUX data and is reliant on your site having enough data to display a field score for each metric, if there is not enough field data the scores will revert to Lab data.

Note: This score can be skewed very easily by a bad result, so if you are seeing your core vitals are not improving it might be worth checking if this average isn’t being skewed by one bad day that is throwing off the average.

Leap Measure > My Scores

In your Leap dashboard, you can navigate to the My Scores tab where you will see a slightly more detailed breakdown of each Core Web Vitals metrics:

These graphs also display the rolling 30-day average so could potentially be skewed. The idea of this report is to show you in more detail how the average score for each core vital is trending over time.

The great thing here is you can see the % of your users who are getting Fast, Moderate, and Slow scores for each Core Web Vital. You will never see a site that has 100% great Core Web Vitals as this is determined by a number of factors, not least of all the individual user's connection and device specification. The aim is for 75%+ of your users having Fast Core Web Vitals scores.

Note: To view the score day by day you need to use our Big Data Analytics.

Leap > My Scores > Worst Pages

Another handy tool inside Leap is the Worst Pages report, which is included in the core vitals section:

Here you will be able to see the worst pages for each Core Web Vitals which can help you target your improvements. However it is worth bearing in mind that the worst pages are also based on a rolling average over a specified date range. The date range can be adjusted by selecting one of the options here:

Depending on which range you choose you may find that your worst pages change, this can show that some of the pages have improved over time.

You can also look at how many pageviews these pages are getting, which can help you target specific pages that have poor core vitals but high traffic since these are clearly popular pages that need improvement and will make a larger improvement to your overall Core Web Vitals scores.

Big Data Analytics Core Web Vitals Reports

The Big Data Analytics reports can be accessed either via the Analytics tab in the Ezoic dashboard or you can go directly to the Core Web Vitals report within Big Data Analytics by clicking on the View Analytics report button within the My Score section of the Leap Dashboard:

Within Big data analytics there is the speed tab which can be found in the left-hand menu here:

In this section, you can see there are a number of subcategories. In this case, the main section of interest will be the Core Web Vitals section.

However, the other categories can help you understand more about what is causing your site to be slow. For instance, caching has a significant effect on your site speed and a spike in Core Web Vitals scores could be attributed to a low cache hit rate.

You can also gain a better understanding of your user's behavior by looking at the Bounce rate by Load speed, which will give you an indication of the number of your users that you are losing due to slow pages.

There is again a report on the slowest pages, which can be very useful for understanding what is slowing your site down on certain pages in more detail than what you can find in the Leap dashboard.

When you click on the Core Web Vitals tab you will see a page like this:

Here is the report for each core vital. You can select between the 3 main core vitals.

By default this will have a date range of the last 7 days, the results shown here are the average for all users on that day.

You can adjust the date range to include the results from a custom range, this is useful if you want to see how certain changes you make affect your core vitals by comparing a date range that spans before and after the changes.

You can also view all users or you can change this to show mobile traffic/desktop traffic by clicking the add segment button.

After making any changes to the report filters you will need to click "Run Report" so that the data will update in accordance with the selected filters.

Below the graph, you can also see a table that includes all the pages on your site. You can sort this table to see the worst page for each core web vital by clicking on the vital you want to sort by. You will then see the table change in the order of highest to lowest for that specific core vital.

This is a great way to see the worst pages for the given date range you selected.

As you can see, Big Data Analytics provides a much more detailed overview of your core vitals that is highly customizable.
