Using the Ezoic Chrome Extension

Modified on: Thu, 22 Feb, 2024

*Note: if you use WordPress, we recommend logging out of your WordPress Admin when using the Ad Tester Chrome Extension to ensure best functionality. Still facing issues? See this article here.

The Ezoic Chrome extension allows you to choose the potential locations and sizes of the ads on your site, without ever needing to replace any code on your page.

Getting started with the Ezoic Chrome Extension is quick and straightforward! Please download the extension from the Chrome store here:

Once installed, a small green Ezoic icon will show in the Chrome browser next to the search bar:

To use the extension, go to any page on your site where you want advertisements to show.

Once on the desired page, click on the Ezoic icon and hit “Activate Placeholders”:

If you have existing placeholders on the page, they will now appear.

To use the Ezoic extension to create new ad placeholders, follow these easy steps:

1) Choose the “Create” button to get the process started. (We suggest using the “Automatically Detect” size option, as this allows the system to gauge the largest/smallest size ads available that will apply to that location) Then click “Select Location:

2) You can now use your cursor to hover over potential ad locations on your site’s page. Choose an area where you would like to have the system test an advertisement. The selected area will be highlighted in blue:

3) Once you have selected a location, click on the black / grey box that appears and choose whether you would like the ad at the beginning or the end of the element. You can do so by using the icon that appears to the top left of the placeholder.

Once you’ve defined the location, click “Insert Here” - your placeholder has now been successfully created!

Chrome Placeholder Settings

Once a placeholder is inserted, you will be prompted to select a “Page Position” and the “Devices” on which you would like the placeholder to appear (Desktop, Tablet, Phone). Further info on the position types can be found here. You can also choose whether to enable 'Adaptive Sizing' and / or 'Fluid Ads':

The Size Tab allows you to select which ad-sizes each of the placeholders will individually test in that location. You can select OR deselect any sizes listed. If you used the “Select All” size option, the system will automatically select all the sizes that can fit into that particular location:

The Page Tab allows you to choose what pages/types of pages the individual placeholder will appear on. By default, the Ezoic Platform will find similar pages to the one you are working on, and put placeholders in the same locations on those similar pages. However, you can also choose to put placeholders on one page only, or exclusively on a directory or subdomain.

For example, say you run a “weekly update” article, which uses the same page structure each week. You will only need to set up placeholders on the one “weekly update” page you are working on, our system will then automatically place ads on all other "weekly update" posts, including those you create in the future.

The Style Tab allows you to style the placeholders. You can choose the size of the margins/padding placed around the placeholder; if the ad is wrapped you can also adjust the left or right alignment via the “Float” section, and the “Alignment” section allows you to place the ad on its own row as well as align to the left, center, or right.

You can also choose whether to display an 'Advertisement Disclosure' and / or a bordered / coloured background to your plceholders:

You can also add a native OR link unit placeholder! When prompted with the drop down menu for “Auto Detect” when activating the Chrome Extension and clicking “Create”, just scroll down and you will see options for those types of ads. The setup follows the same process above:

If you wish to review your current placeholder setup, switch to the “View” mode and ensure you “Activate Placeholders.” Your placeholders will display in various colors (different color for each placeholder position type) and include a drop down menu at the top left of the placeholder. From here, you can click “Edit” to display the placeholder editor window where you can make changes to size and style.

You can always remove a placeholder navigating to the drop down menu on the individual placeholder, and clicking “Remove”.

*Please note: removing placeholders that you system is already testing can be detrimental to temporary ePMV and revenue, as it will take the system time to recalculate the best placeholder setup for your visitors without the placeholder you removed. This is why we suggest simply “deactivating” the placeholder by removing all the available devices instead of deleting the placeholder all together.
