Ezoic Ad Tester is a great way to use the power of multivariate testing on your own version of your website. Using Ezoic Ad Tester, you can create up to 100 potential ad units, place them on your site, and let Ezoic's system test the different combinations of sizes, locations, types, and quantity of ads, to find what works best for each user that comes to your site.

Ezoic’s system is always balancing revenue and user experience, so it will determine the optimal number of ads based on the specific user, and which combination of sizes and locations maximizes revenue while improving user experience.  For example, if you have 20 placeholders on a page, Ezoic’s system may determine that the optimal number of ads for User A is 4 and for User B is 6.

Go to http://www.ezoic.com/start.php to create an account and get started.

The setup wizard on your dashboard will help you keep track of what step you’re at when setting up your site with Ezoic:

Step 1: Integrate

In order to Use Ad Tester, you must be integrated with Ezoic.

Step 2: Enable Monetization.

In order to gain access to Ezoic’s Ad Testing technology,  you will need to click the enable monetization button.

Step 3: Set up Ad Testing.

Step 3a: Wrap your Existing Ads

Click on 'Ad Testing Setup'. Ezoic’s technology is going to test new ad combinations to find what works best for each user. In order to do this, it will use placeholders - potential ad locations - to test new ad sizes, locations, and number of ads on your site.

Wrapping your existing ads lets our system know these ads are there and allows Ezoic’s system to test your existing ad locations along with new ones without interfering with your current ad setup. When set up is complete, you can split test between your unchanged original ad placements and the Ezoic optimised versions of your site.

To wrap your ads, you’ll want to create a placeholder for each existing ad location on the site. Each placeholder can house multiple ad sizes for different devices, making it easy to test thousands of combinations with Ezoic’s Ad Tester.

Here's a video on how to wrap your existing ad codes.(https://ezoic.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/48000454262-how-to-wrap-your-ads)

What if I am using Google Auto Ads only?

Great - no further action is needed, as our system will have you covered automatically.

What if I am using Page Level Ads?

If you are using page-level ads, or javascript inserted ads, please wrap them in this code snippet.

What if I am using Link Units or Native Ads?

When wrapping your ads, make sure to wrap Display ads in Display placeholders, Link units in Link Unit placeholders, and any Native ads in Native placeholders. The How to Wrap your Ads article above has instructions on this.

Step 3b: Add Additional Testing Locations with Ezoic's Placeholders

After you’ve wrapped your existing ads, the next step is to include additional locations to be tested by Ezoic’s system.  You have two options to do this:

Manually adding placeholders

To manually add the placeholders to your site, you’ll follow the same steps as you did to wrap your ads by creating a placeholder in Ezoic’s Ad Tester Dashboard.  Define:

  • Where they are on the page

  • Any styling you wish to add

  • Choose what device the ad should show on

  • Select various sizes. It’s important that you only select sizes that will fit in each location on the devices you select. The images of devices next to each ad size show the device each size will show on. Green means it is 'on', and grey means it is 'off'. (The 'default' is Ezoic’s suggested devices for each ad size.)

  • Once the placeholder code is generated, add this placeholder div to your site in the location you want the placeholder to appear. Here are some examples:

You can retrieve the relevant HTML code for a previously created placeholder in the Ad Tester app by clicking this button:

Using Ezoic’s Chrome Extension

  • You can also use our Chrome Extension to add additional placeholders to your site.  The extension allows you to drag and drop new placeholders on your site and then automatically scans the site for all similar pages and adds the placeholder in the same location.  This way you can set up one article page and all other similar pages will automatically have the placeholder added to it. See this guide on how to use the Chrome Extension.

  • For both options we suggest adding as many placeholders per page as there is content to Support them, to give the system lots of options to test.  The more placeholders you add, the more granular the system can optimize, helping you achieve the best results.

  • *Our team is more than happy to help you with the setup of the site.  Please email your Account Manager for assistance.

Remember - it's up to you to ensure that each individual placement has the correct ad location selected and that all of your placements comply with the Adsense Terms of Service (https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/1346295?hl=en).

This includes no ads under pictures that mimic a slideshow, no ads too close to next buttons or menu items, no ads that look like content and no large ads on the first screen of mobile devices.

You can then review your ad placeholders.

First, visit your website in the Chrome browser and activate the Ezoic Chrome Extension.

You should see a small Ezoic logo in the top right of your browser that looks like the below. Click on the logo to access the extension’s options.

When you activate the placeholders you'll be able to see colored boxes which represent placeholders on your site.

You can preview all the sizes you selected for each location to ensure that they look correct by clicking the drop-down menu in the corner of each placeholder, then clicking through the ad sizes displayed. You should also emulate a mobile device to ensure that your placements work on mobile phones as well. You can do this by opening the chrome developer tools (F12) and then enabling device mode (Ctrl + Shift + M / Cmd + Shift + M) (open information here: https://developers.google.com/web/tools/setup/device-testing/devtools-emulator)

Step 4: Apply for Google's Ad Exchange

Once you've integrated your site, you'll be able to fill out the application for Google's Ad Exchange (Step 4 in your Ezoic Dashboard). This is a requirement to work with Ezoic and gives you access to Google's premium ad marketplace along with all of our other demand partners and header bidding providers.

Note: It can take anywhere from 4-6 hours for the approval to go through, but you can continue setting up while you wait!

Step 5: Turn on Ezoic's Ad Tester

Once you're happy with all your ad placements, go to 'Turn On/Off Settings' which can be found under Ad Tester, in the monetization tab.

You can turn Ad Tester ON by clicking on the On/Off slider beside each device. The percentage of traffic that is sent through the Ezoic platform can be adjusted when you turn on a device by navigating to the settings tab on the main dashboard.

Any changes must be saved before leaving the page.

Note: In order to use Ezoic Ad Tester, you must be integrated with Ezoic and signed up to the DoubleClick Ad Exchange.

Step 6: Patience

As with all testing, it will take time for the Ezoic Ad Tester to test all the possible combinations and find the best ones.  Depending on your website's traffic and the number of positions and sizes that you try, this can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months.

To give you an idea of how many combinations you're testing, please reference the following chart. This chart assumes 3 possible ad sizes for each placeholder:
