Guide to Using Tag Tester

Modificado el: Mon, 28 Nov, 2022

What is Tag Tester?

Tag Tester allows you to A/B test different combinations of title tags and description tags on your site. By testing, you’ll see which variation outperforms the other so that you can publish your content with a title and description that drives traffic, improves CTR, and decreases bounce rate. This tool makes it as easy as possible to determine the best SEO-friendly tags to use for your site.

Why is title tag testing important?

Testing title tags is a crucial part of how sites appear in search results. Indexed titles are a contextual ranking factor—this means search engines rank titles with relevant content higher than titles with mismatched content.

When the right title is used, it improves click-through rates, decreases bounce rates, and overall increases traffic. The machine learning can identify which title performs best and adjusts for you.

How do I get access to use Tag Tester?

From the NicheIQ dashboard, navigate to the "On-Page SEO" menu, and then click on "Get Started" in the Tag Tester section.

How do I setup a tag test?

Click on "New Experiment Group", which will open a dialogue box for you to name your experiment to identify it apart from other experiments you might create.

You can input as many titles as you wish to test against your original title for any URL on your site. The general process is:

  • Create an experiment group (you can always rename it later)
  • Create an experiment - choose from three options
    1. Select from popular pages
    2. Search by URL
    3. Import from CSV list of URLs
  • Create trials per that experiment
  • Start the experiment, which puts your first trail in a “Ready” state
    1. Continue experiment means only trials that have not been tested yet
    2. Restart experiment means every trial will be retested

The actions that are associated with each experiment are:

  • Pencil icon- edit experiment
  • Play icon - starts an experiment
  • Chart icon - view experiment results
  • Down arrow icon - download experiment results
  • X icon - delete the experiment

If you have multiple experiments you want to perform the same action for, use the dropdown Bulk Actions menu to apply those actions to the selected experiments.

How does the test work?

There are five main lifecycles of each trial:

  1. Trail Starts
  2. We replace the tags on the page
  3. Wait for Google to index the page
  4. Gather metrics
  5. Calculate final metrics and winner

How can Tag Tester test different variations through Google at the same time?

Tag Tester does not perform the tests at the same time, but one after the other. If you create trials for titles t1, t2, t3 for a given web page, Tag Tester will test title t1 for a week, then title t2 and so on. It starts the trial once it has confirmed Google Index contains the right version of the page and tracks various metrics that reflect page visibility and engagement. You can then select the title that provided the best performance for the metric you were most interested in optimizing.

How long does a test take to determine which title tag is better?

Our AI takes a week to two weeks to fully complete testing. Tag Tester shows which title performs the best across metrics like:

  • Pageviews
  • Sessions
  • Bounce Rate
  • Click-Through Rate
  • Average Search Result Ranking in Google Search

How will I know which test is the winning title tag?

Tag Tester uses an intelligent scoring system that analyzes the metrics mentioned above to determine which variation performed the best in search engines overall. The variation with the best “total score” is automatically displayed as the title of the URL selected.

You can also view or download the results from the experiment table.
