Introduction

Ad Categories allow you to filter the types of ads served on your site. Much like the blocking controls in Google AdSense or Ad Exchange, this feature lets you restrict certain sensitive topics—such as gambling or weight loss—from appearing. While this is a powerful tool for maintaining site integrity, it is important to use it strategically to avoid unnecessary revenue loss.

Overview

How to Manage Ad Categories

To access and update your preferences, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Ezoic dashboard and navigate to EzoicAds > Ad Restrictions.

  2. Locate the Ad Categories Blocked section.

  3. Click the Pencil Icon to view the full list of available categories.

  4. Toggle specific categories to "Blocked" or "Allowed" based on your needs.

  5. Save Changes: Ensure you click save at the bottom of the screen to apply your updates.

Default Blocked Categories

To protect the general user experience, Ezoic automatically blocks several highly sensitive categories by default. These typically include:

  • Social Casino Games

  • References to Sex

  • Sexual & Reproductive Health

You have the option to unblock these if they are relevant to your specific niche, which can increase the pool of advertisers bidding for your space.

Tips and Best Practices

Every category you block reduces the number of advertisers allowed to bid on your inventory. Lower competition generally leads to a lower EPMV.

  • Audit Regularly: Periodically review your blocked categories. An advertiser you blocked a year ago might now be a high-value partner for your evolving content.

  • Balance Sensitivity with Revenue: Only block categories that truly conflict with your audience. For example, if your site is about fitness, blocking "Weight Loss" ads would significantly hurt your revenue as those are likely your highest-paying and most relevant ads.

  • Use Data: Monitor your EPMV after making major changes to your ad categories. If you see a sharp decline, consider unblocking less-sensitive categories to restore competition.
