What is the Objectionable Content filter?

Last Updated a month ago

Introduction

Understanding and managing objectionable content is crucial for maintaining compliance with AdSense policies and ensuring the continued display of Google Ads on your website. This article delves into the Objectionable Content filter within the Ezoic platform, a powerful tool designed to help you monitor and address content that may violate AdSense terms of service. You'll learn what constitutes objectionable content, where to find the content filter in your Ezoic dashboard, and best practices for handling flagged content. Additionally, we will cover the update process for the content filter, ensuring you have all the information needed to keep your site compliant and optimize your ad revenue.

What is 'objectionable content'?

The Ezoic monetization system employs an A.I. that monitors every word on all pages of your site for objectionable content. This system is designed to help keep your site compliant with Adsense policies and prevent violations of terms of service from Adsense and other network providers. When the A.I. detects objectionable words, it flags these instances and displays them in your Ezoic dashboard. The system will also prevent Google Ads from showing on content that includes 'bad language'.

As a Google Publishing Partner, Ezoic requires all sites using its monetization service to adhere to Google's policies. It is crucial to understand what constitutes "bad language" by referring to the Adsense required content policies.

The content filter tool, accessible under the 'Settings' menu in your Ezoic dashboard:

Select content on the left hand side then Objectionable Content:

This displays the affected URLs, the objectionable words found, and the number of page views within a specified date range.

If you have content marked as objectionable, you are encouraged to revise the content to remove not only the flagged words but also any controversial context. This is particularly important for URLs that generate significant traffic, as objectionable content can negatively impact revenue.

The content filter reports occurrences of controversial content within the last 7 days. Once you update your site to remove this content, it will no longer appear in the report after 7 days. You can verify this by adjusting the date range filters in the report to start the day after you removed the content. Note that Ezoic reporting updates at midday PST for data from the previous day, so allow some time for updates to reflect in your dashboard.

Additionally, it's important to note that if objectionable content appears in the title of an article and that title shows in your recommended pages widget, it could affect multiple pages beyond the original article. This could extend the impact of the objectionable content across your site, further emphasizing the need for cautious and thorough content revisions.

Tips and Best Practices

To optimize the use of the Ezoic content filter and ensure compliance with AdSense policies, consider the following best practices and tips:

  1. Monitor Your Dashboard Regularly: Frequently check your Ezoic dashboard under the 'Settings > Content > Objectionable content"  to stay updated on any flagged objectionable content. This proactive approach can help you promptly address any issues and maintain compliance.
  2. Revise Content Thoroughly: If content is flagged as objectionable, review not just the specific words but also the surrounding context. Removing controversial content both from the flagged page and any related pages can help prevent further violations.
  3. Check the Impact on Revenue: Pay attention to the number of hits each URL receives, particularly if they are top landing pages. Sites with significant objectionable content may be losing potential revenue, so cleaning up these pages can be financially beneficial.
  4. Review Article Titles and Widgets: Ensure that objectionable content is not present in article titles, especially if these titles appear in recommended page widgets. This can prevent the spread of flagged content across multiple pages on your site.
  5. Track Updates and Adjust Filters: After removing objectionable content, use the date range filters in your dashboard to confirm that the URLs no longer appear in reports. This check is crucial to verify that your updates are reflected in the Ezoic system, which updates at midday PST for data from the previous day.
