Ezoic's Consent Management App - Overview

Ezoic’s Consent Management App is free and gives you the ability to configure and setup cookie permissions for visitors to comply with GDPR regulations. Ezoic automatically maps IPs and switches out ad tags based on visitors’ responses—helping with GDPR & CCPA compliance.

Publishers that collect and store PII (Personally Identifiable Information) need to let their users know that it is being collected, and they need to grant users the ability to remove that information (‘opt out’) should they wish. Additionally, Google will offer a non-targeted ad monetization option via AdSense.

Please also see the links at the end of this article for more information on GDPR, CCPA and Ezoic. Whilst this app will help you manage consent compliance for the consents, logging and privacy rules for GDPR, every company, website, and legal entity, have different data collection requirements under GDPR regulations, and the ultimate legal responsibility for ensuring full compliance remains with each publisher.

Installing the Consent Management App

The app’s unique and sophisticated system will pull in information from any cookie that's being dropped including those from ads on your original setup to help you with your task of managing your compliance.

You can find the Consent Management App under 'Settings' > 'Privacy' To get started, click 'Enable Ezoic Consent Management':

Please note cookies are required to display all types of ads. No ads should display until a visitor has approved cookies within the modal.

Below is some more information on the cookie categories:

Necessary

Necessary cookies help make a website usable by enabling basic functions like page navigation, statistical tracking (for example traffic), and access to secure areas of the website. The website cannot function properly without these cookies.

Preferences

Preference cookies enable a website to remember information that changes the way the website behaves or looks, like your preferred language or the region that you are in.

Statistics

Statistic cookies help website owners to understand how visitors interact with websites by collecting and reporting information anonymously.

Marketing

Marketing cookies are used to track visitors across websites. The intention is to display ads that are relevant and engaging for the individual user and thereby more valuable for publishers and third party advertisers.

Unclassified

Unclassified cookies are cookies that we are in the process of classifying, together with the providers of individual cookies.

What Will this Modal look like on my Website?

Once you’ve enabled the Consent Management Dialog in the app, Ezoic will then show the following modal on your website:

You can preview this by scrolling to the bottom of the Dialogue Content page and clicking Preview. You can also change the design of our CMP under 'Settings' > 'GDPR Settings' > 'GDPR Dialogue Features'.

Selecting Cookie preferences in the modal

Recommended Cookies” will enable re-targeting cookies in order that interest-based ads can show to visitors from the EU.

If visitors choose “Allow Necessary Cookies” then contextual ads, based upon the content of the page, will show.

There is also an option for visitors to see further details. Clicking on 'About Cookies' will expand Ezoic’s cookie terms:

All other personal information collected by your site, for example, if you have a comments section or social media links, must be encrypted when stored and you must take measures on your site to ensure the collection of all personally identifiable information is compliant.

Who will be shown the modal prompt?

The modal prompt will only appear for EU residents - so using IPs and relating them back to geolocations, the location of the user will be determined, and if they are within the EU, they will be shown the modal prompt. If they are not within the EU, then they will not be shown the modal prompt.

Cookies Tab

Under the Cookies tab you need to go through and categorize all the cookies on your site. You can do this for Found Cookies and User-defined Cookies.

Third Party CMP Instructions Tab

You have the option to integrate 3rd party consent management provider (CPM) solutions which follow the IAB Consent Framework with the Ezoic Consent Management App. Many of them charge for the service. If you want to use one of these instead of Ezoic’s free app you can make that selection here.

More information on CMP Vendors can be found here: CMP Vendors

  • Please note all consents will need to be communicated to Ezoic via the '_ezconsent' variable.  Instructions on how this script should be implemented can be found within the 'Third Party CMP Instructions' section of the Consent Management app.
  • The CMP needs to communicate visitor consent decisions to the Ezoic system to know whether to display ads or not on Ezoic versions. Please make sure you implement this correctly to make sure ads can show to EU visitors where consent is indicated.
  • The script needs to be implemented AFTER the modal is displayed

You can find this in the Ezoic app by clicking 'Third Party CMP Instructions':
