Introduction

Ad Restriction Rulesets allow you to customize the ad experience based on visitor behavior and origin. While standard settings apply to your site globally, Rulesets let you create "if/then" scenarios—for example, "If a user comes from Facebook, show fewer ads." This is a powerful tool for publishers running paid traffic campaigns or those looking to protect user experience for specific referral sources.

Overview

A Ruleset is a collection of conditions that, when met, trigger a specific limit on ad density or ad types. You can manage these in the dashboard under EzoicAds > Ad Restrictions > Ad Restriction Rulesets.

Key Ruleset Capabilities:

As shown in the dashboard, you can trigger restrictions based on multiple criteria:

  • UTM Parameters: Target specific marketing campaigns using utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, or utm_content. This is ideal for distinguishing traffic from paid search vs. paid social.

  • Referrer: Limit ads for users coming from specific external websites (e.g., traffic that contains facebook.com or reddit.com).

  • Cookie: Create restrictions for users who already have a specific cookie set (e.g., distinguishing new visitors from logged-in subscribers).

  • Site URL: Apply rules to specific pages or URL patterns.

  • Key Value: For custom segmentation beyond standard parameters.

Steps

1. Creating a New Ruleset

Navigate to EzoicAds > Ad Restrictions.

  1. Scroll to the Ad Restriction Rulesets section and click the green plus (+) button.

  2. Define the Rule:

    • Rule Type: Select your targeting trigger (as seen in the screenshot, e.g., utm_source, Referrer, or Cookie).

    • Pattern Type: Choose "contains" or "matches."

    • Value: Enter the specific identifier (e.g., your campaign name or the referrer URL).

  3. Set the Scope: Choose Landing Page to only affect the first page the user hits or User Session to apply the limit to every page they visit during that specific session.

2. Configuring the Restriction

After clicking "Create Rule," define the specific restriction to apply to that segment:

  • Ad Limit: Set a maximum number of ads per page allowed for these targeted users.

  • Disable Specific Types: You can choose to turn off high-impact units like Vignettes or Anchor Ads specifically for this ruleset while keeping them active for other visitors.
