What rules should I be aware of when adding placeholders?

When adding placeholders to your site you should be careful not to add them in places that violate the Google ad placement policies. As Ezoic is a Google Certified Publishing Partner, we must abide by all policies set.

Pages that you shouldn’t add any placeholders or ads to:

  • Pages behind a paywall or that cannot be accessed by Google’s robot.txt or our team. It can help to consider whether a password is required to access the content, as you’ll need to make sure Google’s and Ezoic’s team have access to these pages before adding ads.
  • Auto-redirect or auto-refresh pages
  • Pages with dynamic content as the primary focus (e.g. live chats, instant messaging, auto-refreshing comments)
  • About us, Contact us, and Privacy pages

Avoid adding placeholders:

  • Over site content (check all the placeholder sizes!)
  • Where site content could cover the placeholder
  • That overlap with each other or with the content (be particularly mindful of mobile versions)

Don’t add any of the following around your placeholders:

  • Anything that brings unnatural attention to the ad such as:
    • Animations
    • Arrows or other symbols pointing to the ad
  • Misleading headers or labels (e.g. labeling ads as resources, helpful links)
  • Encouragement to click the ad
  • Images that give the impression they are related to the ads

Overall it should be easy for your site visitors to visit your site and interact with it without accidentally clicking on ads or being confused by whether an ad is your content or not.

If you see any placeholders causing any of these issues, you’ll want to fix this as soon as possible. Identify which placeholder is causing the issue by noting the page and placeholder number (you can use the Ezoic chrome extension to identify this). Then edit the placeholder to stop the violation from happening. You may need to edit its position or size to fix the issue.
